OCTOBER BUSINESS MONTH – MARK ENGLUND INTERVIEW

CEO & Founder Fiber Sense

Fiber Sense is delivering a completely new digital platform for digitising movement and events in cities over wide area grids in real time with no gaps.

How did the idea for your business come about?

On a flight from Seattle to San Francisco on a clear night looking down at the mass of lights in the cities below and putting two views together for the first time – 1) that optical fiber cables are everywhere already and 2) that they can be re purposed to bridge in a sonar like capability for detection, classification and tracking of objects and events in cities.

How do you generate new ideas?

By making space for uninterrupted deep dives on difficult problems.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Sticking with tough problems and emerging with products and capabilities that blow the minds of our customers. Witnessing the positive impact in terms of safety, efficiency and productivity of our capabilities on all the stake holders in cities.”

What is the best piece of advice you would you give to your younger self?

Don’t sweat the small stuff and building anything of real value is going to take grit, persistence and perseverance – so settle in and enjoy the adventure!

Name two activities that you would recommend business owners invest their time in when working on their business?

1. Make time for uninterrupted windows of time for deep work and creativity on a weekly basis.

2. Engage a business coach who has done what you are trying to achieve for quality perspective and questions.
